The film is best served concentrating on its main story, and, when it does this, a few claustrophic thrills are generated.Įd Harris and David Duchovny are the film's leads and are the best things "Phantom" has going for it. The story unfolds in fits and starts, throwing unnecessary and uninvolving subplots at the screen in hopes of developing some narrative depth. Focusing on rogue KGB agents who infiltrate a Soviet submarine, the film produces minor suspense, has a respectable cast, but delivers little else.Įschewing the American cinematic convention of having Russian characters speak with Russian accents, "Phantom" has an immediate strike against it for those who appreciate some regional color in their characters. An interesting premise is completely underserved by "Phantom," a small-scale, submarine-based Cold War melodrama.
